Mr. Sanon worked with Mr. Bankman on a financial literacy initiative for low-to-moderate-income adults enrolled in education programs. As part of the collaboration, students who did not have bank accounts could open one linked to FTX’s platform, giving them the option to spend their money on cryptocurrency. Nobody was pushed to buy digital currencies through FTX, Mr. Sanon said, but one participant chose to do so. Chavie Weisberger was 25 and desperate to leave her unhappy marriage when she walked into a Hasidic beth din in a Borough Park living room in 2008.

The FAFSA is used to assess a student’s financial status, and to determine their eligibility for any state or Federally supported financial assistance. The FAFSA is also used by most colleges and universities, as well as the majority of independent scholarship and grant programs, in determining a student’s eligibility for financial aid. Students should make the FAFSA priority number one in their search for grants or scholarships to help them pay for college.

These programs are funded by the state of New York, and are administered through the New York State Higher Education Services Corporation. In addition to ensuring that our core curriculums adhere to California’s Common Core standards, we offer development programs to suit the varying talents and abilities of our students. It focuses instead on imparting the values of the fervently religious Hasidic community, which speaks Yiddish rather than English and places the study of Jewish law and prayer above all else. Recently, Ms. Weber said, Aaron’s teacher told him that the planets revolve around the Earth. Parents who try to withdraw their children from yeshivas over a lack of secular education often cannot do so, hampered by social pressure and a rabbinical court system. Our seventh and eighth graders have access to some of the finest programs in Shasta County. In middle school, we continue equipping our students for successful learning in high school and beyond.

But when she got home from work each afternoon, she was reminded that her youngest child’s nonreligious education was sorely lacking. At one point, she said, Aaron’s schoolwork consisted of copying single-digit numbers and letters. For the first 30 or so years of Beatrice Weber’s life, she did what was expected of her, starting with her engagement to a young man whom she had met only three times before, sitting across from him at her parents’ dining room table.

The family faces huge legal bills, and they have become the subject of gossip on Stanford’s campus. He and his wife, the Stanford Law professor Barbara Fried, were more than just supportive parents backing their child’s business. Mr. Bankman was a paid FTX employee who traveled frequently to the Bahamas, where the exchange was based. Ms. Fried did not work for the company, but her son was among the donors in a political advocacy network that she orchestrated. So she filed a complaint with the state Education Department in 2019, accusing Aaron’s school, Yeshiva Mesivta Arugath Habosem in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, of breaking the law by not offering an adequate secular education.

The Parents in the Middle of FTX’s Collapse

Mr. Bankman-Fried’s business and political empire was always a family affair. The FTX founder was a prolific political donor, and he was part of a network of contributors who gave money to groups recommended by Mind the Gap, people familiar with the organization said. He also helped bankroll a nonprofit organization called Guarding Against Pandemics that was run by his 27-year-old brother, Gabe Bankman-Fried. Ms. Fried, 71, resigned last month as chairwoman of the board of a political donor network, Mind the Gap, which she had helped start to support Democratic campaigns and causes. Mr. Bankman, 67, has postponed a Stanford class he had been scheduled to teach in the winter, and he’s recruited a white-collar criminal defense lawyer to represent him.

The Part-Time TAP Program – The Part-Time TAP Program is designed to provide financial assistance to students who are enrolled for a minimum of 6 credit hours per semester at a participating state college. To be eligible, students must maintain a minimum ‘C’ average, and must meet the state’s minimum income requirements. Award amounts vary, and are determined by financial need and the number of credit hours undertaken per semester.

The sudden collapse of the crypto exchange has left the industry stunned. Long before their son became a billionaire celebrity, Mr. Bankman and Ms. Fried were popular faculty members at Stanford, where they have taught since the late 1980s. At their home on campus, they regularly hosted Sunday dinners with friends and colleagues, which multiple attendees compared to a modern salon.

But the event’s organizer was a figure better known in academic circles — Joseph Bankman, a longtime tax professor at Stanford Law School and the father of Sam Bankman-Fried, the now-disgraced founder of FTX. Malky Wigder’s two sons, Moshe and Chaim, said they witnessed and experienced corporal punishment at their Hasidic yeshiva. Wahl’s brother, Eric, first alerted the world of the news that his brother had died earlier Friday evening.

He grew the company into a $32 billion business, cultivating a reputation as a hard-working do-gooder who barely slept and intended to donate his fortune to causes backed by the effective altruist movement.

We receive amazing community support and are proud of the awards and accolades we have received for our outstanding academics, athletics, and fine arts programs. But after her divorce was made final two decades ago, she assumed she could move her two sons from one Hasidic group’s yeshiva into another’s, where they would get slightly more secular education. She said she soon discovered that her own family members were calling, visiting and writing letters urging other yeshivas against enrolling the children.

Some said they signed without fully understanding what they were committing to. Perhaps no barrier to moving children out of Hasidic schools is more significant than the rabbinical court system known as the beth din. Ten lawyers who handle Hasidic divorces in the state court system told The Times they had seen a marked uptick in cases in which education was a major issue, pointing to several dozen in the past decade. The true number of such cases, however, is not known because they almost always play out in family court proceedings, the records of which are not public. And still more are resolved in the beth din before they can even make it to New York State courts.

Our Food Service and Transportation staff have been working hard with our special summer programs, and our technology crew has been putting in an amazing amount of time to make sure we are all set for all student and staff needs. Still, many people in the family’s social circle view the situation through a sympathetic lens, according to interviews with more than a dozen friends and colleagues. They insist that Mr. Bankman and Ms. Fried couldn’t have known about any wrongdoing at FTX, while acknowledging that Mr. Bankman may have been naïve in his embrace of crypto. At the height of its corporate power, the cryptocurrency exchange FTX convened a group of athletes and celebrities for a charity event in March at the Miami Heat’s N.B.A. arena. Local high school students competed for more than $1 million in prizes, pitching “Shark Tank”-style business ideas to a panel of judges that included David Ortiz, the former Boston Red Sox slugger, and Kevin O’Leary, an actual “Shark Tank” host. Young students of Yeshiva Mesivta Arugath Habosem have insufficient secular education, according to the state Education Department.
